‘Tis the season to make memories! The holidays are my favorite time of the year and they’re even more magical with little kids. Here are five fun Christmas things to do with kids plus a Holiday Bucket List printable to help make your season special.
1. Plan a Special Movie Night
My girls love having movie nights. During the holidays, I always plan a special surprise for them with new PJ’s, yummy snacks and something I know they’ll love watching. This year, we are so excited for the new Blue’s Clues & You! Holiday Special debuting Friday, December 4th at 11/10c on Nickelodeon. Of course, we will definitely be recording the special so we can watch it over and over this holiday season.
If you aren’t familiar with Blue’s Clues And You!, this show features Blue, a preschool-aged puppy who uses paw print clues to communicate with her caregiver, Josh. It’s interactive for kids and also provides educational entertainment with loads of laughs.
In the Blue’s Clues & You! Holiday Special, Josh and Blue play Blue’s Clues to figure out what Blue wants for Christmas. Kids will help decorate the tree with Steve, skidoo to Santa’s Workshop to help Joe and Blitzen wrap and load presents onto Santa’s sleigh, and also celebrate a night full of Christmas traditions.
I’m so excited that the original hosts of Blue’s Clues, Steve and Joe, are back for this episode! This holiday special is a can’t miss for kids who love Blue!
2. Bake Something Sweet
Nothing says Christmas like delicious cookies. My girls love spending time in the kitchen and the holidays are no exception. My mom’s traditional sugar cookies are our family’s favorite. We love rolling out the cookie dough, cutting out holiday shapes and decorating our creations together.
Fudge, cupcakes, or brownies, whatever your favorite holiday treat may be, get your kids into the kitchen to help! Making memories while baking together is one of our very favorite Christmas things to do with kids.
3. Make Homemade Christmas Ornaments
Every year, we create homemade Christmas ornaments to add to our tree. They are such a great keepsake and also make good gift ideas for grandparents too. We made three festive designs including a stocking, snowflake and Christmas tree. These crafts are very easy for little ones to do, of course with a little adult supervision.
The stocking ornaments are red card stock cut into a stocking shape. My girls glued cotton balls to the top and then added glitter and jewels to decorate them. The Christmas trees are created with large popsicle sticks that are painted green and embellished with gems, puff balls and a gold start at the top. Lastly, the snowflakes are created with popsicle sticks, painted white and then sprinkled with white glitter for a little sparkle.
4. Set Up a Special Tree Just for the Kids
One of my favorite holiday traditions is setting up a Christmas tree just for my kids. My girls’ tree is filled with their favorite ornaments. They decorate it, and also redecorate it throughout the holiday season.
5. Find a Way to Give Back
The fifth and final of my list of Special Christmas Things to do with kids is finding a way to give back. We’ve been shopping for kids in need this year to ensure other local families have a memorable holiday too. In the past, we’ve enjoyed creating Operation Christmas Child boxes together and shopping for canned goods to share with our local food pantry. In addition, donating money to the Salvation Army bell ringers is an easy way to get kids involved and excited about giving back.
